The car maker Nabors Industries, which sells electric vehicles, has partnered with Tesla and Nissan to build a $1 billion battery factory in California.
The factory, which could be operational by 2020, will be built at the former site of the former Nabors Assembly Plant.
It will be the largest battery factory on the West Coast, with a capacity of up to 1.5 million kilowatt hours of power, the company announced Tuesday.
It also has plans to build another 1.6 million kiloweatt hour battery plant in Los Angeles, which it says will be operational next year.
The battery plant will be part of a massive $10 billion project to expand the range of electric vehicles on the U.S. market.
Nabors expects to create 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and create approximately 1,000 manufacturing jobs.
Tesla has also signed a deal to build and operate a battery plant near Reno, Nev., in the same area, which the company says will employ up to 150 people.
Nissan and Tesla will have exclusive access to a major new battery plant for the next 10 years, according to Nissan.
Both automakers have invested billions of dollars in battery production.
